Surfer and clear break

Surf’s Up with Carpe Diem Cruises New Week-long Surf and Paddleboard Safaris across The Maldives

Maldivian Surf Guide

Answering the rise in demand from independent surfers to explore Maldivian waves, the award-winning liveaboard Carpe Vita adds four surf safari weeks in 2019.

For the past decade, Carpe Diem Cruises in The Maldives has been offering week-long and 10-day dive safaris across the atolls on three luxury liveaboard yachts. In recent years, an increased number of private charters from Australian tour operators have brought a kite surfing and Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) community into the mix, and the experience has begun to catch on.

“Previously we have received individual enquiries and occasional requests from kite surfers and surfers for a safari across the atolls, which are difficult to accommodate on an isolated case-by-case scenario when the specific cruise focus is diving and snorkelling. In the last year, we’ve seen a sharp rise in requests for specific kite surfing and paddleboard safaris, showing a clear rising demand and new niche market that we are ideally positioned to cater to, with three dedicated cruise yachts designed for that specific leisure market,” explains Agnes van Linden, Assistant Managing Director of Carpe Diem Maldives.

Surfer and paddleboarder

Renowned for it’s marine life and private island resorts with white sand beaches, The Maldives has slowly been raising it’s profile as a surfers paradise and a new destination for a growing SUP community travelling to The Maldives from around the world. Due to the nature of the surf breaks visited on Carpe Diem Cruises over a week, these are suitable for intermediate and advanced surfers, whereas it’s possible for complete novice paddleboarders and kitesurfers to develop their skills on the surf safari trips.

“Based on the success of the private charters with our Australian tour operators, which we will continue to work with, The Maldives is definitely on the global surfers travel radar,” adds Agnes. “The annual Maldives Surfing Champions Trophy each August has most definitely helped raised that profile, with top world-class surfers and big names visiting and participating. For now, The Maldives is still a relatively new destination for the independent surfing and paddleboard traveller who has covered all the typical destinations and seeks something new.”

Surfers in The Maldives

Carpe Diem Cruises attracts like-minded travellers with their adventure cruises, inviting guests to embrace opportunity with a seize-the-day approach to travel. The new (Kite) Surf and SUP Safaris in 2019 are allocated to four weeks in May and July on the award-winning Carpe Vita vessel. Voted in 2017 as one of the Top 10 Liveaboards in the World, the Carpe Diem Cruises surf safari weeks will cater to 12 surfers, with 10 en suite cabins. The boat also has a fully licensed bar, communal lounge area with a TV, and a Jacuzzi on the top deck.

During the new surf weeks on Carpe Vita itineraries will include morning and afternoon surfing, travelling to different surf breaks where the action is each day with our onboard Maldivian surf guide, exploring the central atolls around North and South Male. Starting and ending from the capital’s international airport island, access to the breaks will be via a separate dhoni that accompanies the main yacht throughout the trip. Priced at USD 2,555 per person, departure dates for 2019 are currently set at May 5, July 7, July 14, July 28 and each week includes;

  • 7 nights on board Carpe Vita
  • Roundtrip Airport to Yacht transfers

Carpe Diem Maldives Announce Marine Expeditions and Conservation Programmes with Scripps for 2019

Following the successful exploration visit by Scripps Institution of Oceanography, USA, in September 2018, a research collaboration with Carpe Diem Maldives continues through 2019 on the cruises and at the new resort for the 100 Island Challenge.

SCRIPPS 100 island Challenge scientist in action

At the heart of Carpe Diem Maldives everyday operations is a commitment to preserving the reef and marine life of The Maldives. Acting on this promise, Carpe Diem Maldives is delighted to continue with the Dive with a Purpose marine conservation programmes for 2019 in collaboration with Scripps Institution of Oceanography from the United States of America.

Guest divers can join the visiting scientists from Scripps with a choice of two Dive with a Purpose trips on our award-winning cruises, as they continue to research the effects of climate change on the underwater ecosystem and to describe the variation of coral reefs across the globe. The Scripps visiting scientists will also spend two weeks at Carpe Diem Beach Resort & Spa in Raa Atoll, as part of their 100 Island Challenge research programme.

Recording sites at Carpe Diem Beach Resort & Spa

Agnes Van Linden, Assistant Managing Direct for Carpe Diem Maldives says, “The knowledge shared and the guest experience on the September trip with Scripps this year was very inspiring and we received excellent guest feedback. In recent years we have focused on reef cleaning and Crown of Thorns Starfish, which has been invaluable and from that, many of our cruises since then regularly include one conservation dive at the request of the guests. Our dive guides have learnt so much from the past trips, its wonderful to be able to continue that work and offer it all year round. This new collaboration with Scripps takes the Dive with a Purpose trips to another level and at the same time we are delighted to support their own research work in doing so. It’s meaningful for us, for our guest divers and of course, in the best interests of the environment.”

SCRIPPS 100 island Challenge Research Work

The cruises departing April 11-21 on Carpe Vita and May 5-11 on Carpe Novo will offer up to 3 dives a day to visit a cross section of reefs that were damaged in the 2014 coral bleaching and haven’t been visited since then, as well as healthy reefs with an abundance of marine life. Each of the Dive with a Purpose safari cruises invites 16 guest divers to join the 4 marine scientists as they replicate the methodology of the classical field surveys Scripps undertake, using innovative imaging and data technologies to archive reefs digitally and watch how populations change through time.

Most of the dives will be on healthy reefs with soft and hard corals, giving divers the opportunity to see manta rays and the underwater life that is naturally surrounding each dive. The scientific research element is an enhancement to this particular cruise itinerary. Recreational guest divers joining the cruise will learn how to take their own reef images to recreate a virtual reality of the dive using special software. In the evenings, presentations will elaborate further on the sightings of the day and the work of Scripps 100 Island Challenge.

Evening marine presentation and 3D imaging

During their visit to The Maldives, the Scripps researchers will also spend two weeks at Carpe Diem Beach Resort & Spa to continue their project surveys on the sites officially assigned to the 100 Island Challenge. With the professional and scientific sampling approach, the research results will contribute to a better understanding of the current state of coral reefs globally and provide invaluable insights into how and why the reefs are changing through time.

General Manager, Socrates Alvaro says. “This opportunity is invaluable to a guest experience. To be able to snorkel or dive with such a high caliber of marine research scientist amidst the beauty of The Maldives destination, hear presentations and knowledge sharing evenings, and gain an informed and comprehensive understanding of our coral reefs is truly enriching. The threat posed by climate change and the need to preserve coral reefs globally is one of the most important issues facing us today. That’s one reason why we began planting a coral nursery in our lagoon one year before even opening the resort. Every day presents new opportunities and it is for us to embrace these and, literally seize the day! I am delighted we are able to support the tremendous work Scripps are undertaking as part of a global research programme, and bring that to The Maldives in such a way that guests can learn and benefit too.”

Reef

On reefs visited with Carpe Diem Cruises and on the house reef at Carpe Diem Beach Resort & Spa the visiting researchers from Scripps will provide scientific context to coral reef observations through informational lectures, discussions, and general conversations. They will demonstrate use of 3D imaging within the context of the 100 Island Challenge, introduce workflow and approach for 3D imaging to guest divers, and create 3D models from guest-collected imagery, providing them with a 3D image as a take-home memento for participating in the dive with a purpose week.

“When we began our dive safaris with the Carpe Diem vessel in 2008, this sector of tourism was still quite young and undeveloped in this destination. I am delighted that our boats have been acknowledged with this global award for two consecutive years, giving recognition also to the local boat building industry. Carpe Diem, Carpe Vita and Carpe Novo were all designed and built at our shipyard on Innamaadhoo in Raa Atoll, with the specific intention of catering to the growing diving and surfing tourism sectors,” says Amir Mansoor, Managing Director of Carpe Diem Maldives.

Agnes van Linden, Assistant Managing Director of Carpe Diem Maldives has overseen and developed Carpe Diem Cruises over the last 10 years. “From the very beginning, we believed great scuba diving, wave surfing and tailor made trips needn’t cost a fortune and should always be respectful of our natural environment. The friendly service and expertise of our crew is a key reason why our guests return time and again for another adventure-filled cruise. With the rise of surfing tourism to The Maldives, in 2019 we have added four dedicated surf safari weeks catering to this growing interest from independent travellers. In those weeks, the guide will also be an experienced Maldivian surfer who knows the breaks and shares his local knowledge.”
